New Toowoomba Hospital

Overview

As part of the Queensland Government’s Hospital Rescue Plan, services will be consolidated on a single, integrated campus at the Baillie Henderson site in a carefully staged approach.

Centred around the new hospital, the project will create a health and knowledge precinct that brings together healthcare, research, education and community spaces on a single campus, surrounded by green spaces and trees.

This project reinforces Toowoomba’s role as a cornerstone of long-term regional health infrastructure.

Construction will be undertaken in stages, with Stage 1 scheduled for completion in 2029.

Project scope

The design of the new hospital precinct will respond to the site's unique character, incorporating its green open spaces, heritage architecture, and significant views to guide the scale, form, and appearance of new buildings.

Stage 1 works

Stage 1 of construction includes:

• A new main hospital building.
• An 84-bed acute mental health facility.
• A new ambulatory and integrated care building for outpatient services.
• A support and diagnostic services hub.
• New multi-storey car parking facilities and connected pedestrian accessways.
• Critical infrastructure upgrades and early civil works across the site.
• Refurbishment of heritage buildings to accommodate administration, education, and training services.

Benefits

The new Toowoomba Hospital will provide greater access to specialised healthcare services, improve patient experiences, and create a modern, efficient healthcare environment that supports the health and wellbeing of the Darling Downs community for generations to come.

Designed to enhance patient and staff movement, operational efficiency, and ease of wayfinding, the redevelopment will strengthen local healthcare delivery while reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region for care.

The project will also deliver significant economic benefits, supporting over 3,000 construction jobs and generating investment across the region during the construction phase.

Darling Downs Health will continue to work closely with Health Infrastructure Queensland to deliver this important project as planning and development progress.
