Darling Downs Health will welcome 39 new midwifery graduates this year, helping boost support provided to women and families across the region.

Health Service Chief Executive Annette Scott PSM said it was exciting to welcome the new midwives to the region, with the graduates coming from across the country including Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

“We are privileged these graduates have chosen the Darling Downs to begin their careers,” Ms Scott said.

“Many of these midwives will join Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) programs at Toowoomba, Kingaroy, Dalby and Warwick – they’ll join experienced and dedicated teams and get the chance to provide continuous care to these communities.”

Midwife graduate Jenna Casamento will join the Kingaroy MGP, after moving from Melbourne.

She said she had chosen a career on the Darling Downs because she was passionate about rural health.

“I want to initiate change and be a provider for those people and families and communities. I'm super excited to be part of workshops within the First Year of Practice program, which will support us in developing skills,” Ms Casamento said.

I've already felt included in the community - I've visited the hospital and everyone there has been so warm and welcoming and supportive of my learning and transition.

Midwife graduate Ella Signal said she was looking forward to first year of placement at Warwick Hospital after graduating from university on the Gold Coast.

“I chose to move from a bigger area like the Gold Coast out to a small community like Warwick to enhance my skills and become a more independent practitioner,” Ms Signal said.

“Growing up, I always wanted to be a part of healthcare, and I was really passionate about women and children and helping them through their journey.”

The newly qualified midwives will be supported throughout their first year of practice under the guidance of experienced clinical facilitators and midwifery educators within the Midwifery specific first year of practice program
