Darling Downs Health has today announced a new Midwife Guide position to provide women and families from across the Darling Downs with access to a highly experienced midwife to discuss questions they have about maternity care.
Darling Downs Health Service Chief Executive, Annette Scott PSM said the position was designed to complement, not replace, the health services’ existing independent feedback and complaints processes.
“We understand that some women in our region are looking for other ways to raise their concerns about maternity care, particularly those provided at Toowoomba Hospital,” Ms Scott said.
“We’ve listened to the women in our community and have responded by establishing a dedicated Midwife Guide who is accessible to women across the Darling Downs,"

“I welcome highly experienced and respected midwife, Karen McDonald Smith as our first Midwife Guide.”
Ms McDonald Smith said she was passionate about supporting women throughout their pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience.
“This role is about listening and will complement my current role as Assistant Nursing and Midwife Director Education, giving me a unique opportunity to make improvements for women accessing our maternity services,” Ms McDonald Smith said.
“Whether women are currently pregnant, have already given birth, or are simply seeking information about birthing at a hospital on the Darling Downs, I’m here to answer questions, talk through their concerns, and help them understand what support and feedback pathways are available.”
Ms McDonald Smith said the Midwife Guide role is not an emergency service and is designed to provide an accessible point of contact and timely guidance from an experienced midwife.
“Sometimes women just need a conversation with someone who understands midwifery and the public health system,” she said.
“I can help women make sense of their experience, talk through concerns, and, if needed, guide them to the appropriate feedback or support processes — all while ensuring they feel heard and respected.”
Ms Scott reiterated that Darling Downs Health continues to encourage patients to raise concerns through established feedback and complaints processes, which remain essential for managing sensitive matters and ensuring privacy.
“This new position complements our already robust and independent complaint and feedback systems,” Ms Scott said.
“We always aim to provide high quality care at our maternity units, and we are always striving to improve.
“That is how responsible, accountable public health services operate, and we are no different.”
Women and families can continue to contact the Darling Downs Health Consumer Liaison team on 4616 6152 or provide feedback online via the Darling Downs Health website.
