Tastebuds at the Oaks Residential Aged Care facility in Warwick are set to be delighted as residents experience a tastier and more nutritious menu thanks to a new training program.

Maggie Beer Foundation chef trainer, Ryan Bonds, is running the five-day program, mentoring staff on how to serve flavourful, nutritious food and deliver an enhanced dining experience for residents.

The intensive training is part of the Trainer Mentor Program, a 12-month program that supports ongoing improvement in aged care kitchens.

Director of Nursing at the Oaks, Janine Webster said the program was an excellent chance for staff to review the menu offering and inspire change.

“This is a great program which will allow us to partner with residents and craft meals that are not only delicious, but meet their nutritional needs,”

“This program will also assist us with improvements to the resident’s dining experience to ensure it supports social engagement, function and quality of life.”

Mr Bonds said the program aims to empower and inspire cooks to make lasting improvements.

“We use a food first approach, boosting the flavour and protein of the menu, with the goal of making every mouthful count,” Mr Bonds said.

“Residents are at the centre of everything we do, regular food forums and feedback sessions are key to the program’s success.

Cooks and chefs will learn key competencies and cooking techniques, that can be used to make tasty and nourishing meals long after the program has finished”.

The Oaks in Warwick is one of only 120 aged care homes across Australia to have been successful in accessing the program this year.
