New Toowoomba Hospital project begins heritage revitalisation works at Baillie Henderson

Work is progressing to deliver a broader health and knowledge precinct at the Baillie Henderson campus, with local construction, trades and service providers showing a strong interest to be part of the next phase of the new Toowoomba Hospital project.

While construction of the main hospital building is progressing, planning is underway to refurbish heritage buildings for administration, training and support services and deliver new healthcare facilities at the Baillie Henderson campus.

Following strong interest from the market, Health Infrastructure Queensland is progressing procurement activities for this phase of the project.

Darling Downs Health Board Chair, Merrilyn Strohfeldt, said the project would deliver lasting benefits for the community while respecting the site’s history.

“Importantly, the refurbishment of heritage buildings allows us to preserve the character of the Baillie Henderson site while adapting it to support modern healthcare delivery.”

“The project is also creating valuable opportunities for local businesses and supporting jobs, providing a strong boost to the regional economy.”

Darling Downs Health Chief Executive Annette Scott said the project was gaining significant momentum across the site.

“The new Toowoomba Hospital will be delivered in stages, and we are pleased to see strong progress not only on the main hospital building, but across the broader campus,” Ms Scott said.

“The main hospital building, which will include at least 538 overnight beds, is well under construction, and we are now preparing to deliver key supporting facilities and refurbish existing buildings to create a fully integrated health campus.”

In addition to the main hospital building, Stage 1 will include:

• A new 84-bed acute mental health building
• A new ambulatory and integrated care building
• A new support and diagnostic services hub
• A multi-storey car park with link bridges and essential infrastructure
• Refurbishment and repurposing of heritage buildings for administration, education and training

Ms Scott said the project would deliver modern, connected healthcare services to meet the region’s growing needs.

“Consolidating services at the Baillie Henderson site will enable more coordinated, patient-centred care for both patients and staff at our nature-rich campus, offering a unique blend of healthcare delivery, expansive green spaces and scenic views,” she said.

“This investment ensures our community can access high-quality healthcare closer to home, now and into the future.”

The project is being delivered by Health Infrastructure Queensland, in partnership with Darling Downs Health.

The first phase of the new Toowoomba Hospital remains on track to open to patients in 2029.
